Mystery is solved!!! The man who came to fix the well pump asked me if I found the quail eggs he left me, I was riding the horse when he arrived, and forgot all about it by the time he left, but thought I'd like to hatch some!!! Wow!! He said he would bring me more...

11 eggs for today

8 eggs from the control group

3 eggs from the free range chickens

Temp 104 F degrees with a light breeze

It seems the longer light hours and the extra scrambled eggs are making a difference for the control group

I've gone back a few weeks, Gander, and I can't see what your experiment is. Can you fill me in? Inquiring minds want to know. Cause I'm nosy like that. LOL Plus, I'd love to know as much as I can learn, especially about increase egg supply.

As for my counts, I had 1/2. I have 2 RIR sisters ("Big" and "Little") that are about 15 months old. They've laid regularly an egg a day from both since the day I got them in April. We had a couple of weeks of steady daily rains with overcast skies and it became a 50/50 chance of having 1 or 2 eggs. Then it went down to just 1 every day. Weather has cleared up for the past week and a half or so, and still not back up to 2 a day. I have added the option of free ranging. First they were both coming out. Now, it's mostly Little, the one I think it still laying. Of course, I have no way of knowing for sure which one it is. Big used to stop and let me put my hand on her to pick her up. Neither are thrilled by it, but will allow it. Now, she's running away. If I can get her and take her out of the lot, she pretty much goes back in. Little comes running across the yard and starts pecking for bugs. Love that!

Anyway, l'd love to get Big, if that's who it is, back to laying again. I need my 2 eggs a day. I'm hoping she's not done until Spring. My FL chicken friends tell me their's lay through winter with no extra lighting or heat. I'm going to ask on the FL forum to see what more people say. I don't have electric at the coop so I'm hoping my girlfriends' experiences run true.

Anyone else have any opinions or suggestions?

Cool! That was nice! I was going to say...wow I had never heard if that and all I could imagine was a line of quail waiting for their turn in a CHICKEN coop lol...

I wish someone would leave ME a whole bunch of quail eggs!

That's too funny! Wouldn't it be fun to try to hatch? They're so cute!

only egg I have gotten today was a no shell one dropped outside on the ground. Oreo decided to tear into it as I spotted it, so I shooed him away from it, then I carefully carried it inside, cooked it, and gave it to them for a treat. They love scrambled eggs.

This is what I found in one of the nest boxes

this morning. It was buried deep in pine shavings and straw and I was more than a little surprised to even find it while digging around for eggs.
