of the marans 9 but tried to take photos without being attacked by my Silky moms protecting them truthfully think I have pretty equal split so getting 4 pullet
would suit me fine... as you can tell near impossible but as you said spartan
it is becoming very evident I have 5 or 6 cockerel of the total 10

@penny1960, yep I can tell you have a few roos there, with my two wk olds? out of 22, I can spot 9 chicks are already showing roo characters. I don’t know yet what to do with them since I have 4 cockerels out of 10 that the broodies hatched and raised, those were more beautiful and vigorous looking than what I normally have seen raised separate from the flock.

@karenerwin, the six chicks that just hatched? They are doing so great, beautiful and tame, one thing I’ve always noticed with my hatches vs store bought or shipped chicks. Here’s couple of pics a day after hatching - all 6 of them, I think the 7th egg might not make it, still in the incubator but seems few days behind when I candled it, which is very weird but it happens.

4/4 today :yaslightly confused though as yesterday we had one that I thought / presumed was from Doris (the 2nd silkie) but there was another today in the same spot and it seems way too big to big to be hers so I'm wondering if Mabel (light Sussex) actually has started laying first not Doris. But her chicks are only a month old so not sure if that is possible?

Yep it’s so possible, 2 of my broody hens that hatched chicks and raised them for 2-3 wks, weaned their babies and had eggs the day they abandoned their broods.
