How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Finally found the nest of my nest box protester....with 5 eggs in it!! :barnie
Do you have a rooster? If not the eggs haven't started developing. Actually, if she isn't sitting them, they aren't developing. Do a float test. If they sink, eat them, if they float, toss them.

Any tips on getting her back in the boxes?
You could get a couple of alpacas ;)

My best advice is to keep her locked in the coop until she lays. Of course that is hard since if she is like my girls she doesn't lay every day nor at the same time when she does.

The one I had that started such shenanigans 3 years ago was a real PITA. She was a very good layer, then nothing. Found a nest with 13 eggs (we ate them all, no rooster, no float) in the flower garden out front of the house. Once that "door" closed she started one just outside the lilacs that line the road - 5 eggs when I found it. Closed that one and the next nest a ways down along the lilacs, not 3' from the road! 4 eggs in that one. I dogged her the next time she tried to get to it and got her back to the barn. I made her a nest box in an old deep cat litter pan in the "feed room" and she decided that was OK for that day because a girl can't hold her egg forever.

After that she didn't lay out front any more. Next nest was in the weeds on the north end of the pond behind the barn. I got to that one and she moved to the weeds at the south end of the pond. I gave up, left a plastic egg in that nest and collected what she laid every day since at least that one was easy to get to. Then we got the alpacas in October (free from people down the road that were moving to Florida). All the chickens were afraid of them but she still ran out to that nest every day she laid. But the following spring she decided laying in the barn in her litter box nest was OK again. She kept it up until the fox got her this May.

No..no roosters here! And yes, I completely understand the PITA.. she's a daily layer, and quite determined she is not going to lay in the nest boxes all of a sudden. She's not trying to go broody thank goodness, one less thing to deal with. After I found the first nest of 5 and collected all thos eggs, now she's decided to wedge herself between the deck and the house, in the back of a flower bed that is difficult to get to without destroying all my plants! :barnie:he
4 from 4 for the day already though....*sigh*

My 8 pullets (I hope) are not quite 15 weeks old so I'm not expecting anything soon. Buuuuut, one of the White Rocks is either a fast developer or a cockerel. The comb is getting red, so are the wattles. No crowing though and also no rooster feathering. :barnie

Guess Bruce you might see otherwise I took what we new was a marans cockerel then decided that there was another marans boy took it put to go to auction got there auction gal asked you really want to sell this hen before we left the house I looked at BF said did it lay an egg he said no okay lets go so hen rode around in the car all day all said and done I have 1 from the main coop
