Smokerbill
Crossing the Road
5 this morning so far.
Late yesterday evening I watched as one of the girls took the "I'm going to drop a soft egg" pose. And sure enough, a minute later a soft shell egg dropped out.
It didn't last long. The other chickens recognize the "pose" and were waiting for the snack. One grabbed the soft shell, carried it a couple feet and swallowed it in a single gulp. The others pecked in the grass and ate all of the yolk and white.
It used to gross me out seeing this behavior, but I'm used to it now. At least they don't eat the hard shell eggs in the nest.
