Yes, their performance is unrivaled but it comes at a costly price as they exhaust themselves rather early on and their tiny bodies succumb to the overexertion.the leghorn hens started laying in August, the others a month later. Nearly every day since they started the Leghorns lay a egg a day, a couple of times thd 2 of them have managed 3 eggs in one day. The other 6 hens manage to occasionaly lay 2 eggs, but here lately just 1 egg total from 6 hens. The Leghorns lay a large egg, it amazes me that such little hens lay such a large egg
Well my Leghorns are gonna be treated like royalty as long as they live and will even when they quit laying they will be taken well care of. Have a leghorn rooster from the March chicks and ordered 15 more leghorn chicks from Strombergs in Sept that are 1/2 grown now, so with the rooster will hatch my own chicks. The Stromberg leghorns seem to be a different strain from the Tractor Supply, they seem to have a smaller comb on their head, or maybe they have to just get older. Anybody know what strain of Leghorn that TS sells, what hatchery they come from? In defense of the Wyandotte's and Sulmtalers, they are excellent table bird breeds, one of the Sulmtaler roosters got to mean so we processed him, and huge big breasted birds, excellent. I had to enlarge the opening of the henhouse door so the Wyandotts hens could get in and out without getting stuck, big square bodied birds.Yes, their performance is unrivaled but it comes at a costly price as they exhaust themselves rather early on and their tiny bodies succumb to the overexertion.
