We have rat snakes here that are black with maroon tips on some of the scales. We call them Aggie rat snakes.They actually make good pets.

I had one that curled up under the duck waiting for breakfast. Then he ate the ceramic egg

Yesterday this one hen was making THE biggest production out of making her nest, getting organized, fluffing the bedding, rearranging her feathers, turning, getting more comfortable, talking to herself.... She's a huge FB marans and when she finally evacuated the nest an hour later, there was one, tiny, boring tan egg. What a disappointment. She should be laying huge chocolate colored eggs. My black star lays a more impressive egg than that. Heck, my bantams lay larger and darker eggs than that! With all the fuss, I thought it was going to be a dark brown hand grenade. Lame.
