How many hens do you see out of these fifteen chicks?

They all are a rich mahogany red, with nice glossy yellow shanks and well-shaped single combs. I would guess their father (I saw him in your other thread) is at least mostly RIR, and looks just as much, and the hen is good quality.
So, in conclusion, if someone sold them to me as “Good quality RIRs” I would be more than satisfied.

I would say Candy, Cathy, Cadbury Creme, Kung Roo, Reeces Pieces, Russel Stover and Mo are all pure RIR.
:celebrate That's awesome! Thanks! Glad to know my mix didn't father them all! (Though I do like some of the weird mixes he gave me, haha.)

Moe has a tiny bit of gold around the black feathers on the back of his neck... it doesn't show up in the photo. Is that normal for an RIR? He's the only one I saw it on, which is why I question it.

Any better pics? He’s probably just as pure as any of them, but that’s interesting:

That's so good to know, thanks! 😁

One thing that bugs me a little... why is it that the father, Wild Thang, has a single comb that stands up but all the chicks have single combs that flop over to one side like the mother? I expected the combs on the hens to flop over but not the rooster combs.

I don’t know. Their father has such a large comb, and their mother’s flops; so I would say more flop-tendency in the chicks combined with larger combs than their mother’s = floppy combs in the boys.

The only other pic I have is the first attempt to get a good shot to tell if he was a boy or not, but he shook his head. You can kind of see the gold in it. I can get a better photo tomorrow. 😁

Here’s a baby girl I rescued (she had pasty butt) from a feed store a few months back. She has lighter feathers and is poorer quality than yours in terms of appearance, and she could be pure 15 generations back. She still is, in the grand scheme of things, worse quality than yours.
My baby Amber.

Makes sense. :)

I got one chick last year from this rooster and my Golden Laced Wyandotte that has the same comb, and his stands up like his dad. (I was surprised to see it because the other chicks had rose combs. Only two had single combs and both chicks came from the GLW.)

I think he’s just got a little extra dash if muttieness in him from his dad, who I doubt is completely pure. Some genes popped up, or something.

I would guess your too has some rose-comb genes in him, and that’s why rose combs pop up. Did you say the GLW has a single comb?
