I used to have too ...
I was owned by a Moluccan cockatoo who was quite the character, but too jealous when I had a baby.
I have raised and had a number of cockatiels over the years, some of which had large vocabularies, and some did fun tricks. One was potty-trained to her cage.
I used to raise Indian ringnecks too, and lots of finches (not parrots, but I had to mention them too). Had some parakeets as well.
Oh, about that small quiet bird ... I've been out of touch with the fancy for a while, but I met the COOLEST little bird one time that I wanted so badly. He was a Hahn's macaw (miniature). He was quiet, and had that puppy-type personality that macaws are famous for. He learned tricks quickly too. I loved that little bird, and had always wanted one after that. I don't know how common they are these days, but mini-macaws might be a great choice for someone wanting a small hookbill.
