How many of y'all actually remember maths you learned in High School??

I've got a mental block of adding and substracting. I can do multipication, division, fractions with no problems at all. As for alegbra, I have to read it and do the problems to brush off the cobwebs in my brain library...its been sitting there for over 27 years.

Ahh.. the things we learned today my parents didn't learn till college. My parents were unable to help me in math once I was in the 6th grade and they both graduated universities.

I guess I'm an oddball. I LOVE math (have a minor in it, should have got a double major). I also love science. ANY science - chemistry, biology, physics, etc.

Sounds like prescription drugs to me, along with suggested dosage?

That's the extent of my knowlege of trigonometry...

Oh, I thought you were talking about DNA for a minute.

I still know the math I learned in high school. I use trig, geometry, and algebra quite often just doing small construction projects around the farm.

I do grounds keeping at a local park and this summer I've been working with a kid who's a junior in high school. He's a smart kid so I try to get him to do some practical math. Like when we were laying out new base placements on the baseball field:

"If the bases are in a 90 foot square, how far is it from home plate to second base?" We double checked that measurement to make sure our layout was square.

Or trying to figure out the amount of fertilizer needed for the grass on the outfield. How would you figure the area involved? He said "I don't know..." I explained, "Well the entire field is a quarter circle with a radius of 360 feet. So figure out the area of an entire circle with that radius and divide by four. Do the same for the radius of the infield and subtract the infield area from the total area".

He knew how to do the math, but had trouble with actually putting it to use in practical applications.

Maths?

Considering there was no such thing as a calulator when I was in school, yeah I remember. Calc and Trig were not required back when the earth was cooling, but I can still do simple math in my head. But I hate it. How did I wind up with an accounting background???

Algebra comes back pretty fast. But I never took calc and trig. For a good reason. Art history was easier. So was dropping out and taking the GED. Not that I advocate that. Back then, a GED meant you were stupid. Thank goodness not so much anymore.

They tell us diploma is better than GED cause it means you are not lazy.

I do fractions as a measurement, and decimals as currency (think in terms of ounces and dollars and i can do it in my head). Geometry is barely there, but algebra and trig i've got a bunch of still. That beaing said my 6th grader has a bunch of "new math" crap that makes zero sence to me, litterly every problem in his math book is a WORD problem. no equasions, just 15 word problems on a page.

Not even a sample problem, so half the time i'm having to re-guess what methond of solving he's supposed to be practicing.

I flunked math. Then I have owned a couple of businesses where I used math every day, figuring percentages, gross profit margins, taxes, yada, yada.
I have no idea how I pulled THAT out of thin air.

Now I am learning the fine atr of chicken math, horse/mule/donkey math, dog math..............ya'll can feel sorry for my DH now.
