How many people truly have "Backyard" Chickens?

We live on 3 acres which include a deep half acre pond once used as a catfish "farm." BTW, the remaining catfish look like torpedos when they come to the dock for their feeding. We can tell they are coming by the wave they make on their way across the pond. Our flock has a 20 x 20 chain link pen in which their coop sits, so they have direct access to a roomy open outdoor area when they leave their coop--accessible to them all day. This pen is attached to the east end of our metal barn. Tomorrow we are cutting a pop door from their pen (under the coop space) into the interior of the barn where we are setting up a 12 x 6 , 6 ' tall, chain link dog kennel. I'll spread pine shavings about 6-8 inches deep in the kennel giving them a dry place to be this winter when they choose and put in a couple saw horses for roosts. I also have a heated base and a five gallon waterer to set in this kennel/indoor run so they'll always have access to water, even on coldest days. They free range in our back yard, near the pond, in the late afternoons, and we lock them in their coop when they retire for the day. But, to the question, yes, they are our backyard chickens. ~G

Totally suburban here. Our chickens are "under the radar" and live in our backyard surrounded by a 6 foot fence.

These are pictures of around my house-we have 6 acres spread out in a funky pattern but we have water frontage too-which my 1 and only duck is afraid of! He preferr his kiddy pool! The coops are there for night time but they free range all morning noon and to bed by dusk! Wouldnt trade it for the world except in winter!!!

well we have them in the back yard and on the side yard we have no where near even a half acre but we have runs built on 3 sides of our house.

house is teensy; one day we'll make it bigger.... one day...but it is cheap to heat.

We live about 10 minutes from downtown Indy and on about 3/4 of an acre. Mine are certainly a backyard flock. They have their coop and enclosed run when I'm not home. When I'm home they wander about the backyard. Its all fenced in and only once have they jumped the fence. And yes, there are already plans in the works to get more chickens
