They have all been taken from the hen. 5 hatched overnight. I now have 18. 13 more maximum could hatch. Unfortunately one is ill

, so I put it in the incubator away from any other quail. The others are all happy, eating and drinking in the brooder.

I always have a couple die the first couple days. The weak ones, I guess. Right now I am watching one of the goldens that I just hatched. He isn't eating or drinking and I doubt he will be with us long. Luckily the other 18 look healthy.

My banty hen hatched 7 quail chicks back in June(?), and they are all doing well with her. She'd been by herself, in a small, covered, outdoor pen, since I bought her last year. She "talked" to the eggs for the whole time she sat on them, and treated them like regualr baby chicks when they hatched. The baby quail would run under her whenever they spooked at something. Now, some will roost, but most like to sit together in the straw at night. Maybe they're all just weird? We've got too many hawks for free-ranging around here.

Good Luck!

i have had a bantam hen that hatch and raise quail. two of 11 died but i don't know if she stepped on them or not. they would go under her to get warm but never missed her when they feathered out and went out on their own. i have a very careful hen who never steps on her chicks but she is a full size hen.
