I leave the feeders in the coops so they can eat when they want. I also currently have water in there, since I don't let them out at daybreak this time of year.

When I am letting them out at daybreak, I usually don't bother keeping the water in the coop to prevent mold.

They fill their crops over and over throughout the day.

Well we feed ares in the morning and then check that there isnt any hay and sawdust in the food, if there is we clean it and put fresh.

Our girls get food 24/7.

Partly b/c I think it's better for the birds (less gorging, never truly hungry, etc.) and also b/c I'm lazy. I really have trouble seeing why folks would want to have to worry about this. The thought "Oh no, I have to go feed my birds now" is anathema to me!

Like I said, lazy.

Because of rodent control, some folks do indeed feed regularly. Feed heavily in the morning, if feeders are empty in the late afternoon, another portion they can finish up before going to roost. Fresh daily water is also part of the daily care routine. Yup, they call these things "chores" for a reason. LOL

LOL! Im the same way LAZY! my feeder holds 50 lbs of feed so i only have to fill it up one every two weeks and i also have a 5 gallon water bucket with watering nipples on the botton so i keep clean fresh water for about two weeks also.

I recommend 24/7...they will only eat what they need they do not over eat...but if you do not feel comfortable doing that...put out about a cup a day for every chicken
