How Many Times a Week?

Before I starting raising CX, we ate chicken about twice a week on average. Now that we raise and sell them, I would say out of 14 meals a week (not counting breakfast - the layers have that one covered), we have chicken 8-10 of them.

Just curious how many meals of chicken everyone else has per week.

Since we eat what we grow, I'm expecting to be eating a lot of egg meals very soon.

26 ducks in the freezer, so budget 2 a month. 6 geese, but several are going to be Christmas presents and our own holiday feast.

We will be raising Cornish Cross next spring and I may have to buy 50 of them, so that is roughly 1 each week. 1 Cornish Cross is between 2-4 meals for my family. Some of it will be dog food, though.

There will be more ducks next spring for the freezer, and I'd like to raise a couple of turkeys.

Meat is budgeted just like the checkbook. Instead of a budget, I have a menu to make sure I have what I need and don't waste anything.

You can never eat too much chicken. Too many different ways to prepare it to make unique meals. Even though I have a steer and 2 pigs in the freezer also, chicken is still the #1 meat on the table during the course of a month.

Dang you are all lucky! I just paid 11.00 for a chicken at the market this Saturday. That and fresh veggies. Living in the city, I have only 5 girls and can not wait to try the real deal. The 2 chickens I bought at the street market are supposed to e fresh free range, we shall see how they taste!

I say we eat chicken 3-4 times a week. and with 6 in our family, its not small portions lol I am excited to have fresh homegrown chicken in my freezer in Oct!! Im going with 30-40 this first run and then see how much we get. I figure we'll need to do it 2-3 times a year as my kids grow.

Im wanting to do turkeys as well, because we love turkey. We plan on doing a couple pigs and a steer too.

With only 30 in the freezer (1/2 there now - 1/2 heading there next weekend) I am thinking only one bird a week as a roaster and then soup or leftovers with the remainder so it will equal two+ meals each week for our family of 3. Hoping for a good hunting year so that the frreezer will also be full of venison (fingers crossed).

BigRed - how many do you raise per year? I was hoping to do another batch this season but hubby and I are a bit burnt out from this first batch of cornish and our regular coop of 24 gals. Next year I will do an early spring batch and a late August/early fall batch and not a batch that runs through the height of the summer. See I've learned already!

I do close to 800 - 400 between March-June, then another 400 from Aug-Oct. We sell around 650 of them and put the rest in the freezer. The third week of June we put 70 of them in the freezer, which nearly filled up a 15 cuft deep freeze. We figure 3-4 chickens per week. For Summer months we cut most of them up for grilling, and for the Winter months we leave more of them whole for roasting. My DW usually cooks 2 of them at a time. We eat of them for the first meal, then pull it all of the bone for other meals. I have also started making chicken sausage, which is a nice break. We have learned to become very creative in making different dishes. My wife also cans some of it, making for quick prep meals.

Looks like we eat more chicken than most other people. Doesn't bother me or the kids. They love chicken.

My husband is one of those people who thinks that every meal should include meat of some kind. I don't like to eat commercially grown meat. So that means that almost all the meat we have in the house is grown by us or a friend who is a farmer (we do still buy turkey bacon and some deli meat). When we first pick up our side of beef from the butcher, we tend to start in on the steaks right away and thus our chicken-eating declines for a while. Otherwise, we probably have chicken 8 or 9 out of 14 meals.

That makes me feel better. LOL I thought we where some kind of chicken eating freaks. We feel the same way about comercial meat. I did raise a few hogs last Winter, but that is gone. At some point I'd like to raise a steer. I'm hoping to put some venision in the freezer. My wife and kids prefer deer over beef.

We don't eat as much chicken this time of the year, maybe a couple three meals a month. But it isn't because we don't have or want it, it's because both my wife and I work off the farm. By the time we get home and do whatever we need to do that evening, it's 9 o'clock and we settle for something quick and easy like hot dogs or sandwiches. As soon as it gets dark earlier we will start having chicken three or four times a week.
