How messy are parrots?

This sounds like a question for @Parront ! If I remember correctly, her parrot is potty trained...

Yes, 1/2 of Dylan's poop each day goes in the toilet. So, her night cage is easy, just vacuum out the feathers shed at night, no poop in there for several months. There remains plenty of poop to decorate her daytime cage! She has hobbies: shredding paper and wicker baskets, chewing pickle balls to crumbs and destroying pinecones to name a few. She likes to "chew" her pellet food, wasting about 1/2 on the floor and the bottom of the cage. She has a room of her own, in which we just replaced the carpet with vinyl.
Parrots are a great pet if you are retired, I love spending time in our bird room. (Also known as an Arizona room or a sun room) I have my computer in there, and dust about once a week when I start having trouble seeing the screen! You need a high tolerance for mess if you have a bird of any kind.

Regarding the mess, I have had and been around birds of various species (not just parrots) for nearly all my life, and in case you're concerned, I truly hold a very high tolerance for mess. I have clear ideas on what it's like to raise and handle a particular bird, from sparrows and quails to ducks and doves, and everything in between!

Hi, some people who ask about the mess or are very concerned about it don't tolerate it well at all! Pound for pound, I would say parrots are messier than chickens, and they live indoors. I have owned all kinds of birds, too, and an African Grey is the best of them all, I believe. Smart, friendly but not clingy and not as loud as some. Not huge, but with a beautiful (to me anyway) color.

It's a personal thing too as to what types of mess "get to you". Some people would get really freaked out by the powder. For me it mostly comes down to poo. I don't mind "firm" poo as much as squishy poo. shrug.

African greys are fabulous. Does yours talk a lot? They are beautiful, but I don't think I've ever seen any bird, ever, that wasn't good looking.

I always kept my parrots on play stands and such when ever I was home, they spent little time in their cages. The floor was always strewn with food of all kinds. Food was always floating in the waterers. Had to sweep the kitchen floor several times a day. Poop as far as the eye could see. Parrots are pigs....but I loved them to pieces.

Yes, Dylan talks up a storm, when she feels like it! Other times, mostly beeps and clicks like a phone or a video game, microwave or smoke detector. She says what she wants to say. If she is out of food, she will grab the food dish with her beak and shake it, and say, "Want more!" If it is not dinner time, the microwave beep begins. She says, "Come here", "purple" (that means blueberry) Of course, when the phone rings, she says, "Hello". When she meets some one new, she will give "high five" when you say "gimme five". I did not teach her that, just found out one day when a young friend came to visit!

Its incredible just how much mess and poop a tiny Lovebird can make but its nuts.

I think the secret to being a big mess-maker is to look cute, and "smile" while you do it. Then it's endearing to your besotted owner.
As for destruction mess, you do need to keep an eye on them. My cocky got out of her house one day and spent her time dismantling the keys off a computer keyboard. She had fun.

And never leave coins on the counter...one by one they will be picked up and dropped over the edge with sheer screams of joy.
