How much BOSS?

I have 6 banties and 1 standard hen and I give them about 2 handfuls of BOSS thrown into the run every day. Can they get too much or does this sound reasonable? Should I worry about impacted crops with such a sharp, big seed? Thanks!

I usually give BOSS to mine after they have been up a couple of hours have eaten their fill of their feed. Then I throw in a couple of hands full also. They eat it all and still tank up on feed before bedtime. Mine have 24/7 access to regular feed, so I think they eat what the think they need or want. If they don't have access to a balanced feed, they will eat whatever than can, so how much BOSS you give them in that situation is more critical than when they have access to both BOSS and feed. They also need grit if you are going to feed the anything but chicken feed.

They also have 24/7 access to layer feed and I give them a plate of leftovers from the kitchen every day as well. The BOSS is a treat I give them and they seem to enjoy scratching around for it. I guess I'm asking if there's a limit to how much their system's can handle. Thanks.

Probably, but they know what that is better than you or I do. I wouldn't use that as a reason to throw a bucket full out there, but a couple of hands full for 6 birds doesn't seem unreasonable to me. I think you are fine.

I mix BOSS with whole oats - about 50/50 - and toss them a handfull every morning & some evenings.
That's for 5 hens.

They sure love to scratch around for it!

I wouldn't worry about the shells, after all they eat grit and don't have a problem.

Thanks for your responses I won't worry anymore. We sure got a good laugh out of watching them eat leftover whole wheat spaghetti tonite....LOL....They would grab a piece and swing it around trying to get it down. Who needs TV when you've got these crazy chickens?!

Chickens don't always know how much is enough, so I'd stick to just a handful of BOSS spread out after they've eaten some of their regular feed.
