How much damage do newly hatched chicks do knocking about in bator?

i am going this weekend to get that type of styrofoam this method looks way better and more safer to me

Sometimes the chicks can turn a pipping egg and cause the chick in side to drown. This happens some, but not with great regularity. I look at it as God's will.

I spend too much on shipped eggs to want to lose even one due to rambunctious siblings.

I'm going to try the foam idea, too.

I was using a Hovabator forced air before, so I didn't have that problem, but I can see where you're coming from with a still air. Now, I am using a Dickey cabinet bator. There is plenty of room overhead, but I'm just thinking they may get out of the hatching tray with the cover not on. This is my first hatch in this incubator, I just got it, so I'll have to see what happens. But I'm thinking I'll get some of those styrofoam strips and try that next time. How thick is it? Are the chicks that have hatched not able to roll around the unhatched eggs at all?

So sorry.

, I was being insensitive to the buyers of eggs. Now that I look at it from that perspective... my comment wasn't really a good one. I was lloking from my angle with eggs, eggs and more eggs. I now understand that if you are paying for your eggs, every egg counts. Good luck with your hatch.

Paula, the foam is about 3/8" thick. Please note that it is not styrofoam. It is a soft plastic type foam that is bendable and flexible. It is soft and compresses somewhat. when you lay the egg in the slot, it nests in the opening nicely, and the foam kind of grips it. The chicks can't knock it out of the groove, and it's even almost impossible for them to rotate it.

I've seen this foam used in shipping boxes for electronics also. I found it in Home Depot in the section that has the glass blocks. Once I saw it and held it in my hand, a big "light bulb" popped up over my head, lol.

Good to know. I've gotta go to Lowe's tomorrow. I'll definitely pick up a few of those. Thanks a bunch!

The carton doesn't put them any higher than they are in the turner. Mine are all forced air to I don't think there's much difference in the temps. I've only got one that has a heating element that they could get burned on and I always make sure the carton isn't directly under it.

I've never had a chick not be able to get out of the carton.
