Hello All

First post here, Awesome forum and have learned a lot...

I'm pretty new to this..

I raised 2 wild Mallards a few years ago. 1 a hawk got and the second kept flying during flight training...
About a month ago my son found a clutch of Wood ducks walking down our lane, no mother around, and they were newly hatched, I would say that day..

Unfortunately they started dying one by one..Still can't figure out why.. Had them on heat, they were drinking, eating and then after a couple of days they started dropping like flies.. Out of 14 only one survived and doing well..

It was pretty lonely, so I ordered 3 Rouen ducklings from the feed store when I was ordering my chickens..
I've put them together and the Wood duckling has taken to them like glue...

They have all bonded with me and follow me around the yard as I do my gardening.. I take them on frequent "duck walks" and we root around the gardens ,compost and manure piles. I get right down on the ground and lay in the sun with them, open up logs and show them where to find all of the bugs...

We go into the woods and they go bananas for mosquitoes and love to peck them off of my legs. They literally climb up me to chase them and know when I lay down that it's feeding time...

Woodie is pretty skittish, however will come and cozy up to me for comfort or when big birds are above... There is a vulture roost next door and they are always around, so the ducks are weary and constantly keep an eye out for them...

I will be getting a rooster to protect the ducks and my hens ( which I haven't gotten yet July 5th).. I'm not really looking forward to letting them free range unsupervised because of past experience with hawks.. We also have several cats around.. One is a stray that we are caring for. It comes in the house and I have been training the cat to get use to the ducks by slowly introducing them and punishing aggressive behavior of the cat...

Last night I finally got the coop to the level of security that I'm comfortable with. I have an old 8X8 tin shed that I've been working on. I've insulated it, have put a big full sized gate with chain link in front of the doors and chicken wire over that. The run is a 10X12 canopy frame with chain link the first 5 feet up,chicken wire inside, and above.. Although I don't have a rat wall, I have berm-ed up the sides and covered with cement and rocks both inside and out.. The hen house also has rocks pile up most of the way around as well as sitting on a gravel bed. All of my security is double redundant, tamper proof (raccoon) snaps. The chicken/duck door has steel grate both inside and out and both are tamper proof.

I've also got 2 wireless motion detectors set up that alerts me to anything snooping around.. So far I've seen a couple of cats and a possum. My office overlooks the coop and run and I have a second story perch that I administer high speed lead ( .22 long rifle) from, mostly for coons and tree rats (we eat lots of tree rats), although we have Coyotes at the edge of the property, about 80 yards away, I have yet to see one in the yard..

Next year at the back of my property I'm putting a 100X25 foot chicken run in that will house 40-50 meat birds. Those won't be as secure, but will have chain link protection and fishing net protection from above. I was given a 12X12 Fruit stand, however have yet to get it over here...

I apologize for the rant,, I didn't intend it to be this long

As far as "Loving my Ducks and Chickens"

Last night was the first night they spent outside. Since then they have lived in the house in a big rubbermaid container right next to the couch.. Since they started eating worms and bugs, they don't smell the greatest,,so it was time to get them outside...

I must have checked them 8-10 times last night, and felt sorry for them as they started peeping for me as soon as I closed the inside doors.. So I got in there with them and sat on a milk crate feeding them fish flies from a new hatch.. I turned the light off and they all cuddled up to my feet.. LOL

This morning we had our first swim in the kiddie pool and they absolutely loved it. They used the rock steps a little, but preferred to jump in/out. They also used the ramps in and out of the coop.. I simply trained them but calling them through the door..

I will be heating the coop with bio mass ( rotting manure/compost) and hope to get away without any heat lamps for most of the winter

I'm seriously considering ordering harnesses for them, other than the Woodie which is free to leave whenever it wants, it is only a guest and will encourage it to go when the time is right

Anyway enough for now.. Hope to have some pictures up soon..
