wow , where do I start...my life's schedule has changed ... i get up ealier EVERy moring to see them before I go to work.. Right after work I go directly to the Duck Hut... THe first 4 or so weeks of their life is spent in the house with us. EVERY NITE they get their treats.. chopped tomatoes, chopped lettuce, peas and corn... They get a fresh blanket every nite to sleep on . ( and in the day during the cold winter months) THey have a Heated hut but dont use it much. I let the hose run and run for them to play in ( plus their 270 gal pond and 2 kiddie pools) ... I buy live crickets in the winter for treats.. and minnows in the summer.
HERES MY 2 NEW BABIES. a week old... Riot and Smudge !

LOL I've just come inside from doing that very thing...for the 4th time today and I can't take the heat well at all but I can't stand the thought of my ducks not having cool fresh water and panting.

I spend up to 4 hours out in the yards, pasture, duckpen and by the pond with my ducks. I crawl into the duck house with my broodies and they let me handle the eggs and babies once they hatch. I go out a few times a night with my head lamp on and gun in hand "just in case" , I let them nibble my fingers and toes (my scovies draw blood now and then LOL) and I make sure I always have at least 2 family size bags of frozen peas in the deep freeze LOL My husband thinks I'm out of my flippin' mind sitting out there with duck poop and crawling into the duck houses but to me it's no different than caring for my kids when they were babies, I didn't freak out when they pooped or peed on me, it comes with the territory and a little stinky poop is a small price to pay for the love of a child or a duck :) I even dream about my ducks almost every night...I wonder if I'm obsessed with them?

I find duck time is quality time, and PlumTuckered speaks for me when she says that some poop is no big deal. There is definitely something wonderful about caring for ducks, with all their duckness - the love of mud and slugs, the fertilizer, the happy running around, the splashing, the babbling . . .

Hey Guys...

Yaa I don't think any of you are nuts..

For me my critters De-stress me..If I'm having a problem and need a break I go take them for a walk.. I walk them once in the morning, once in the afternoon and then a few times in the evening, especially as it's getting dark.

Tonight we were weeding in the garden. They took GREAT interest in my gardening tonight and would wait for me to pull a clump of weeds, then jump right in. With ducks you have to pull weeds in a couple of different places at once just to keep them out of your way..

I also found out tonight that the same tactics on how you play with a cat and a laser also works on ducks..They go nuts chasing the dot. However you have to be careful that you don't shine it in their eyes.... Shining the dot on ones bum gets an interesting reaction from the others as they poke at it.. LOL

I stopped at a local farmer's house tonight and talked with him about his chickens, Guinea hens, turkeys and such and ended up buying a small breed Rooster,, not sure what it is and pick it up next week..

Almost bought a big barred rock rooster however my daughter wasn't to excited about having to deal with a big agressive bird..A small one is the perfect solution....

Welcome to BYC Eric!
In my experience the big breed roosters are the sweet ones and the banty roos have been very aggressive. I finally gave all of my banty roos away, they even killed one of my large breed roos. My large breed roos are so sweet and gentle I can pick them up and they don't even fuss..they don't like it but they don't fuss at all. We've been at a friend's farm and their banty roos would chase their grandkids and spur them, we have children visit our place and the big roos never even give them a second look.

My Ducks love when I weed too LOL

I have done everything that is mentioned here. I love giving my duckies a shower. Thought it runs the water bill clean through the roof. Lol! But they are defiantely worth it. I love my chickens to, dont get me wrong. But duck faces are just so cute! I would be nothing if I didnt wake up to there calls every morning. They are always blabbing away telling me its time for a walk or they want treats or they want fresh water. So at the end of the day I ask myself, Do i own ducks, chickens, cats, and dogs.....NOOOO! They own me! Lol! My freezer is always full of pees, my money is always being spent on meal worms and minnows, I am out checking on them every 10minutes to make sure they are okay and dont need anything. I am a SLAVE!!!!! A happy slave!

Oh and NO we are not out of our minds, we are just very devoted parents taking very good care of our children.
