How much do you pay for feed??

Pics
I pay about $19 for a 50 lb bag of Kalmbach flock raiser crumble. Non-GMO, 20% protein. I've never had "billing" issues with my birds. And they love mash; it's their favorite "treat." Very little feed gets wasted here.

I used to be able to get Kalmbach at a farm store near my old house and I liked it very much. It's not worth a nearly-half hour drive to go to that store though. :(

It's at least a half hour to the place that carries Kalmbach. But it's at least 20 minutes to TSC too. Yeah, I'm "way out there."

I like the place I get Kalmbach. It's a family owned farm. I can make it be on my way home from errands into Grand Rapids, so that's what I do. I try to make every trip to anywhere do double or triple duty for errands.

That's the thing about living way out in the country. You forgot something at the store? Tough. Get it next time you go. Do a better inventory and make a list so you won't forget. Are you listening, hubby....? :)

I have been paying $26.99 for flock raiser at TSC and they eat so much feed it gets expensive. Is this alot for feed? How much do you pay?
TIA!
It's getting pretty expensive. However, there are other options.

I grow gardens and let the girls forage in them. I raise minnows and goldfish in a pond to feed them. I let them forage my compost heap and I limit the feed they get to encourage them to forage.

Granted I planned it this way when I got them, but the prepper in me calculated that it wasn't feasible to expect feed bills to remain steady, ever.

I'm not above dumpster diving for produce either. Grocery stores throw out the larger leaves on cabbage and chickens happen to love them. They also throw out produce that has opened packages or isn't pretty anymore. I have a big tub I throw it in and wash before I give it to them.

But you're not wrong, not only are feed prices skyrocketing, some of the bags are now 30lbs instead of 50.
