How much is a chicken worth?

I don't know where you're from & I'm sure such things vary from state to state. In NY dog losses can be reimbursed through the state at a set schedule-chickens are capped at $15 I think. If your state has a similar system then a maximum rate may be established & it might be difficult to get more than that. Seems unlikely that the value of future, unlaid eggs would be a factor.

For a layer honestly I would not price her at less than $20 and as a pet I would not price her at less than $50.

I am sorry you lost your girl and I agree...make the dog owner pay for her, any property damage and the court costs. They must learn their lesson.

Get a 22 and keep it handy...shoot it if it comes back. It is worth the couple hundred dollars you will pay for the gun. If you are in the city, look for other means like mace or pepper spray.

How much do you like your neighbor?

You could see if they would settle outside of court, for the $20 or so that a layer would cost. Or, if they refused to do that you could go to court and figure in the cost of the eggs that she would have laid. You could do neither of these, and just give them a warning to make sure it would never happen again.

Like I said, it all depends on how much you like your neighbor.

My birds are purchased for breeding, and though some are only pet quality... I've spent time and money to raise these birds (food and all). So go after them for the cost of the claim, the court time, and of course to purchase another hen that you have to feed and raise until it lays. If you spent $20 on food, and $20 on the bird to get her to lay.... as for $40 + like I said, court costs.

Worth it to teach the idiot a lesson.

P.s. - was the coop or anything else damaged as well?!

If the moron was really sorry he would have slapped you $20 and took the dog home thankful that the dog didn't eat ALL your hens.

Did you call your local animal control and report the owner and dog? Did the dog come on your property and cause any other damage?

i don't think $20 covers it. Maybe start at replacement cost for a similar age and breed of chicken (you can check eggbid.com for prices, or your local craigslist), cost of feed and medications, lost egg production for the two years a hen generally lays, mental anguish).

You might be able to send the owner a bill and get him to pay it without having to go to court.

We live in a small town and animal control will be out tomorrow. The police came out today and officer with Napolean complex said it's 'just a dead chicken not a human.' I wanted to kick his short knees. No other damage was done to property. I don't know whose dogs they are. Should find out tomorrow. I'm an operating room nurse and I'm having day dreams of Napolean coming in for minor surgery. "You want pain killers? No need....It's just a little surgery" HAHAHAHAHA!

Just kidding if anyone thinks I would really do this.
