Per day: 3 litter boxes, 2 cat feedings, 2 chicken feedings and water changes all around. He will likely only come three times, possibly four if he decides to take a break from family on the 25th.

Financial compensation for gas money is a bonus in this case.

I would say $10 a day would be appropriate, but like everyone else has already said, depends on what all you are asking, how far they have to drive ect. I am lucky, my sister lives about 7 miles from me and she has chickens too so we take care of each others whenever one of us goes out of town. Good luck!

In my area, if it was a neighborhood kid who could just walk over and check on the birds, make sure they had food/water, then $40/50 would be okay. If it's someone who has to drive over, maybe just a 5 minute drive or less, then I'd probably offer $50/60. If they have to drive and it's anything more than a 5 minute drive, then I'd offer $10 a day as a minimum.

Actually I do it for free. My first was a friend a met here on BYC. He only lives about 10 miles down there road, so it is not bad at all. I just fed and water them and collected eggs. He let me have the eggs I collected which was super sweet. And I am sure someday he will chicken sit for me.

If you don't have a fellow chicken owner friend, I would say the chicken sitting experience is different and some people think it is a big job. But honestly if I had to pay a teenager to do it I would only pay NO more than $10 a day. $15 if they were opening the chicken house, feeding, watering and coming back to close the chicken house up at the end of the day. That's $75 for 5 days and most teenagers would love that kind of money.

But you have to really know a responsible, trust worthy teenager IMO.

My youngest son has done this and he got 10.00 a day (I think) and then got fired.

I suppose if you hired a local fox or coyote you would not have to pay very much.

When we go out of town on business or pleasure, I hire a real true to life insured pet sitter.

She charges $25 per visit. Included in that visit, walk two dogs, feed one cat, clean litter box, pick up mail and newspaper, change lights around, move car in driveway, feed and water chickens, gather eggs (she gets to keep them), feed and water horses. Plus she has a list of emergency numbers, water and natural gas cut off valves. Who to call if a home mechanical fails (AC/heat/plumbing). She also checks all gates and fencing, locks on yard gates. The nieghbors also have her telephone number if they observe an animal emergency. Sounds like a lot but I figure she could do it all in about 30 - 45 minutes.

We pay for 1 visit on the day we leave, 2 visits per day when gone, and 1 visit on the day we return. Also on the day you return, if I don't call and confirm that we have made it safely home, she will visit to check animals-- and charge for it to! Fine by me I know my animals are taken proper care.

No way am I going out of state for a few days and leave the care of my animals to a maybe responsible or maybe irresponsible 10 year old. When I go on vacation I want to relax and not worry, and that includes not worrying about my animals care.
