All of our chickens have lice pretty bad and are missing nearly all of their neck feathers. I bought some ProZap Garden and Poultry Dust (Permethrin) to treat them with. For poulty the directions say 1 lb for 100 birds, thats only half the can and we only have 21 cochins to treat. It doesn't seem like very much and I don't want to overdose. Can anyone give me an idea of how much to use on each chicken and how would you go about dusting chickens? Just ruffle it up in their feathers? Also should I sprinkle it around the coop as well as putting it on the chickens? And lastly, I have 2 broody hens that are close to hatching, any thoughts? I don't want them abandoning their nests because I dusted them, and I don't want the dust to harm the soon to be chicks since eggs are porous. Thanks!

how would you go about dusting chickens? i use an old sock to dust with or i just put a little here and a little there and ruffle the feathers to get it to their skin (i use seven dust) i have tried using the pillow case and putting the chicken in that up to its neck and doing it that way but that didn't work to well even with 3 people doing it it was still hard

Just ruffle it up in their feathers? yes thats one way

Also should I sprinkle it around the coop as well as putting it on the chickens? inside and outside clean out the bedding the whole 9 yards and then repeat both treatment of chickens and coop, run, ect in 10 days...make sure you get into the cracks and all

I don't want them abandoning their nests because I dusted them, and I don't want the dust to harm the soon to be chicks since eggs are porous.i would treat the broodies as well (i use seven dust) i would rather loose the unhatched eggs than the broodies plus you could always put the eggs in an incubator. i have a thread going on mites right now and just added a poll on it maybe you can check it out in a day or 2 since i just started it. had another one on here some wheres but i have week old chicks with mites so i started a new one to include treatment on the bitty's

The chicks are going to be living with lice if you don't treat the broody hens now. I don't like to dust new chicks (don't recommend it unless really necessary). So I'd treat those broodies now and repeat every week until gone. If the chicks hatch I'd still treat the broody if it was me (not the chicks).

Clean out all bedding and nest box material with every treatment. You can put the dust everywhere (they don't recommend putting insecticide dust inside nest boxes though) in the coop or you can buy permethrin spray (dilutable) at the feed store to treat the coop and even birds. I like to put cedar shavings in with my pine shavings in the nest boxes to keep bugs out.

I too use an old sock like hdowden, tied off at the top for the dust. I keep a cardboard box lined with a large plastic garbage bag, and place the chicken in the box (shallow box) on her back, holding onto both feet.

I dust under each wing, the vent area, and everywhere except the face. Then I go get the next chicken. I wear a mask and gloves, and take a shower afterward (long sleeves are good too).

It takes me about half a can to treat my 26 large fowl, as I am very generous with the dust as I shake the sock around their feathers. It works very well and I have to do it every 4 months to keep mites away- I haven't had to deal with lice. For the nits after the bugs are dead, I have read on BYC that coconut oil will dissolve them over time with an application of it.

The life cycle of lice I think is two weeks but some sources I have read say that for infestations it is beneficial to treat every week until gone.

I hope all those buggies get gone for you!!!

Ok, thanks for the advice, I think I will wear gloves and such and sprinkle some on each chicken and work it into their feathers, and I will treat the broody hens and put some around the coop. I was mainly worried about using to much causing some sort of reaction, but it doesn't sound like that will happen.

I Love this forum and all the great knowledge people share so generously! I am currently in the same boat with lice on my chickens. I did the second dusting last night (at the 1 week mark) while the girls were on their roosts as I inherited most of my chickens with the house I bought and they are not at all hold and pet tame. Dusting on the roosts like that meant that lots of it went all over the coop and landed in the nesting boxes. Should I discard the eggs I got this morning? There was powder on them, but then I think there would have been plenty from the girls dusty back ends anyway.

Personally I would discard all of the eggs for the next week or two. After dusting, I just give them or our dogs or I scramble them up and give them to the chickens.

I've been battling lice and mites for the past year. As soon as I get it under control, the barn sparrows never fail to bring it back. If only I could dust all of their nests...

I'm actually trying a different route for the first time today. I purchased ivermectin pour on to try to get rid of the mites. It was recommended to me by multiple BYC'ers.

Thanks Cochins1088! That is not a bad idea to give the eggs to the chickens, especially since they are molting. Thanks for the advice!

Is Ivermectin the same as frontline? Please let us know how that works. I Hate parasites!!!
