How old is too old to get chickens?

i used a large tupperware tub as the brooder (the kind you store christmas decor in). my house is old and built off the ground with no insulation so it gets really cold at floor level (southern vernacular architecture-- meant to keep heat OUT not in!

) the heat lamp wasn't really able to get the temp into the 90 degree range so i added the heater. Maybe it was too hot. but when i turned the heater off it was too cold so that's why i was thinking of getting older birds, Skip the high heat brooder stage...

Our baby chicks died so we were thinking of getting older ones from the feed store. The ones there are 5 weeks old... Is that too old? (i read that its better to get them young so they get used to being handled by people and you can get to the eggs easier)

I've gotten several at that age. They'll love you just as much as day olds, especially when they learn who feeds them.
