How many weeks do I want my chicks to be when I bring them outside? 5 weeks? 6 weeks? 7 weeks? 8 weeks? I have heard them all but what should I do I have never raised chickens never even touched a chicken over 5 days old! I need some HELP!

I put mine in an outside brooder a few days after they were born. I kept them in the brooder until they were 5-7 weeks old and moved them to a coop. They did fine, but I started them in March, so they had time to acclimate. Not sure about doing the same now.

We will build the coop ourselves (do not worry about the coop) and Quick Question: How tall are chickens full grown?

Depends. Mine are about a foot tall, but I had a Barred Rock Rooster that I swear was 2 feet tall when he tried. I saw a breed of chicken (maya?) that are 90cm (about 3ft) tall.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Chicks can be taken out to the coop for good when they are fully feathered, which is about 5 or 6 weeks. After this, they have enough feathers to stay warm. If they are still in the brooder, you can take them out for field trips however in an enclosed area for some time out of the brooder. As long as it is a nice day in the 60's, sun is shining and the wind is calm, they will appreciate some new scenery. Helps to break up boredom in the brooder and gets them acclimated to the outside and new things. Offer up some grit if you do start to take them outside. Just some parakeet sand or even some dirt from out side in a small bowl will do.

Enjoy your babies and welcome to our flock!

Glad you have joined us.

Agree with 5 weeks to move to coop.

RE: how tall is a chicken - regular large hens about a foot, but they can reach higher when they want treats or to explore under their coop for bugs. Why do you ask?
