How smart are deer ?

Haven't seen him in a month or so. Last time was a quick glimpse of him actually traveling with a doe. Generally he has been solitary. Bow hunting has started so hopefully he continues to exhibit caution. 'They' will be looking for him this year as he is approaching trophy level.

The does are starting to get active around us. We saw triplet does from this year standing in a yard on the edge of town this week. We thought they were statues until their ears started pivoting around. Then two days ago en route to our friend's funeral at dawn there was a nice doe standing by the road. Haven't seen any bucks yet but we are planning to put out our game camera this week.

We are probably right on the verge now. Funny thing about this buck is that every year he has started scraping and rubbing late - generally late December early January. Also strange about him is that once his mother and sister were shot he has been primarily solitary and I've rarely seen him with other deer.

Well, he's finally acting like a 'real' deer. I haven't seen him in over a month. He's still around because I see tracks and sign. He's even scraping and rubbing like a normal buck. No one has seen or gotten a shot at him.
