We have started our grow out coop, for out of the house but not in the hen house age chicks. Right now we have the "legs" 2'. With the floor done it looks quite tall for young chicks to go up a ramp. We can still cut off some the the leg length but am not sure what is a good hieght for house. What do you think?

My coop is 2ft off the ground, the ramp is 6ft long so the incline is not very steep. When it is time for the chicks to leave the brooder I section off part ot the coop with chicken wire, the new chickens can interact with the flock without getting picked on. I have two runs that are seperated by chicken wire, both have ramps that are 6ft long. The little chicks have no problem using the ramp.

Keep it at 2 ft. Lower they are, greater chance of all manner of rodents and snakes to move in. key to the chicks getting in and out ok is to make the walkboards a gradual slope, not a steep one. 4:1 is good. (12-3 pitch) Cleats no more than 4" apart.

When I figure my ramp length, I measure from the ground to the bottom of the pop door. I then multiply x3 to get my ramp length. For traction I staple down hardware cloth the width and length of the ramp. I put the ramp on a hinge so that it can be lifted up out of the way for cleaning/maintaining the run. Works great, and the chickens use the whole ramp instead of just hopping up or down right at the door.
