How the bee was made, the bee made honey

Yum! I love honey. My dad has been a beekeeper my whole life, so there has been no shortage of honey. When I still lived at home I would help him tend to the hives. I used to eat honey it by the spoonful, heck I just squeezed the honey bear into my mouth.

When we bought this house, there was a man who kept a few hives of bees on the property. He asked if he could continue to do so. We said yes as long as you give us a jar or two of honey. It turns out he went to school with my dad. Anyway, Once a year he drops of a box, which usually contains what I would consider to be more honey than most people could use in a year

Here's a handy conversion chart for baking with honey that I found a long time ago:

12 ounces honey=1 cup

3/4 cup honey=1 cup sugar

When baking with honey, lower oven temp by 25 degrees.

Reduce liquid in the recipe 1/4 cup per 1 cup honey used.

Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda for each cup honey used.

Hey, MP, DH and I were talking about building our own hives, but DH brought up the fact that you probably shouldn't use treated lumper.. And untreated out in the elements won't last long.. What did you make yours out of? Do you think you could explain more in detail how you built it, if DH needs you to? I'll show him your pics tonight and see what he says. Any pointers you could give? Thanks.

MP I thought the reason for Top Bar hives is that you dont need a honey extractor? How much honey do you think you will be able to get out of each hive but still leave them enough for winter?

It is not treated lumber. We used linseed oil. You can paint the outside. Do not paint the inside. The removable top has enough of an over hang that the water sheds and doesn't touch the box at all.

Sam - I have no clue. We are flying by the seat of our pants here. First time ever with bees. First time ever with a top bar. We are learning as we go. I hear that 60lbs of honey from one hive is a alot for this part of Va so we will see.
