How to become self-sufficient (kinda) with chickens.

Getting extra calcium to the chickens? Easy - peasy! I give my chickens that one or two bites of left-over pudding, casserole, or milk & cereal after every meal served or prepared. Why wrap or pack it in your fridge, just to find it moldy in a couple days. My hens love oats and milk.

I thought i was the only one! no, seriously, i have a great fear of zombie apocolypse, I find myself scoping out buildings when I'm in town to find the more "zombie proof" ones, just incase. the movie I am legend started it all, I can't even watch zombie movies anymore, it totally freaks me out. I never considered the tropical weather makes them decay quicker angle! hmmmm... that's something to consider...

my best friend says if it comes down to it she would rather off herself then try to be self sufficent and fight zombies, she thinks I'm crazy with my chickens/gardens/making laundry soap stuff.. I may be crazy, but at least I'll have something to eat.

hello, I am right here with you on the sustanability thing. I have set up my flock with strong chickens for laying I am trying a new breed to me salmon faverel (sp) and then I have my nursery hens silkeys and cochin's and such for setting and raising new birds I love my perl white leggers for eggs they are the very best for simply egg production in my mind, not so cudely though. I freerange when I can and get neighbors to save worms and such for me, kids love to feed them to the ducks and chickens. my problum I got 25 chicks and like 12 are roosters. my husbend wants to eat them but they are bantums barley a mouth full. also if you get a brood hen and a mama hen like I have it is gold so keep a close eye on her we call our Dixie hence my screen name. she has raised all our birds even ducks with no heat lamp needed. they are much calmer and interact well I say it is becuse Dixie told them we are good people. hubby says carfull people will think you really hear them talk back...

my advise is stock up on grit and calceum it is not to spendy so get a few bags ahead then you will have time to dry all egg shells helps to avoid bacteria infection. as for corn and such you can grow peas in winter under a makeshift plastic tent and spinch all though hard to germanate has tons of calcium. I have so much to learn and love this sight and welcome any chance to learn about this stuff
