How to Breed Black Breasted Red ?

Chris09 Wrote

Well you take Black Breasted Red Saipan Jungle Fowl or a Black Breasted Red Malay over Rhode Island Red Hens the F1 offspring should come out a Red pattern similar to the Rhode Island Red.
Now cross the F1 Red Hens back to the Black Breasted Red Rooster (either the Saipan or Malay) from this cross you should get;
Red Columbian, Gold Columbian and Black Breasted Red.
Now you can cross the F2 Black Breasted Red back to there Father/Grand Father or you could cross them to a Black Breasted sibling all offspring from this cross should be Black Breasted Reds

Great info, onlyt problem is I don't care for the Saipan or the Malay. Sorry, but I think they are ugly. I'm wanting something somewhere between a Plymouth Rock and Wyandotte, but bigger like a Cochin.

You can all ways breed the look of the Saipan or Malay out wile you are doing your breeding for color.
Look at the Rhode Island Red, There is Chittagong (Light Brahma Brahmas), Red Shanghai (Cochin), Black Breasted Malay and the Red Malay in there back ground.

I guess I could. I just read that about the Rhode Island Red today about them having Malay in them. I may have to try it. We'll see if I get this going or not. It looks like it may be a long road.

IF every thing go's right your looking at around 4 years if you start with chicks..

Yep like Chris said you can breed the breed the looks out of them and using those Oriental breeds can help your the size of your birds. Like the Brahmas, they are nice looking birds and you could probably cross a Malay or a Cornish, who are both kinda ugly breeds to some people but with stuff like that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, like some people go crazy of over Naked Necks and Show Girls but I think they are disgusting and I'd rather just catch some buzzards than have either of those two. But anyway breeding a Cornish with a Cochin should basicly give you something pretty close to a Brahma. If you've saw Big Medicine's Silver Laced Brahmas, he said that project was originally inspired by a Cochin X Cornish cross that came out looking like a laced Brahma, Some were there are pictures of one of the F1 birds. But that shows how you can get big beautiful birds from using those big Oriental breeds even if they are kinda ugly.

And yes, a project like this if you used all these different breeds would take YEARSSSS. Espcially if you are wanting something that will breed true to a certain type.

Yes, I saw Big Medicines Silver Laced Brahmas, so totally cool.
What color of Cornish over I would say Partridge Cochins. Wouls a Dark Cornish work?

ETA: Oh yeah, I don't have to use all the breeds listed, just listed them to see what would work best. Those are just the breeds that I really like so if I could use them I would.

And thanks alot you guys for your infoermation.
Chris09 I wasn't really putting those breeds down and trying to ditch your suggestions.

For Big Medicines, I believe he said his was White cornish with SL Cochin.

If you used a Cornish, then dark would be your best bet but they arent BBRed, they are or I should say WELL BRED ones are double laced Partridge where Partridge in Cochins is Single Laced Partridge, So you would still get laced birds from those crossings and not true Red Duckwing, unless you wanted the laced birds to use. But if you want a BBRed Oriental then the Malays would proabably be your best bet, and if you get them from the hatchery they will already be watered down some so they may not even have that mean look to them if you get them from a hatchery, but hopefully they will still have decent size and the color which would be the main things.

The other thing you could try is;

Black Breasted Red Malay Rooster over a Light Brahma Hen the F1 offspring should come (Sex-linked) Males Yellow/Golden Columbian and Females Gold incomplete Columbian.
Now take the F1, "Gold" Hens and cross them back the Black Breasted Red Malay Rooster the F2 offspring should come Gold incomplete Columbian and Black Breasted Red.

By crossing the Malay and the Brahma you should kill most of the Malay look.
