Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Trim the feathers back to make it easier, soak in a bath, and wash them. There are a lot of reasons why they could be, mites/lice as mentioned above, vent gleet https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/vent-gleet-aka-nasty-chicken-butt, worms (if she has never been wormed you might consider it), diet (some foods/ an excess will give them the runs), some hens have excess feathers or their anatomy makes it hard for them to stay clearn etc...

Two people, warm water, and lots of patience. The trick is to loosen the material from the feathers without accidentally tugging on them, while avoiding getting a drenched chicken. Good luck!

Welcome to BYC!

Lots of things can cause a dirty backside from worms, vent gleet, bacterial infections in the intestines, coccidiosis, the diet of the bird, over heating, and hosts of other ailments. So try to figure out what is going on. Then you can wash the butts up well, trim the feathers off that are getting so dirty if you like and do as Gander has suggested. Use probiotics in the water. These will help greatly in the intestinal tract with the consistency of the poop and absorbing nutrients.

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!
