How to decide which breed??

Thank you everyone.

@oldhenlikesdogs Which of my breeds are considered busybodies? I think we will cross those off our list since we’re looking for a mellow bird.

@LRH97 How do you keep the cresteds from being picked on? Are you able to trim the feathers near their eyes to improve their sight? Or maybe tie them up in a rubber band? I saw a few pictures of Silkies with their top feathers tied up.

@Broody Bist we looked into RIR but were frequently told they are not friendly and are dominant within the flock.
Generally anything considered light as far as weight is usually a busier bird. The only exception I have read is sometimes leghorns are easy going. Game breeds run around a lot and can be more scrappier.

What is the purpose of your birds? Are you looking for good egg production or just for pets that occasionally give you eggs? Some breeds like cochins are big friendly birds, or little friendly birds depending on which type you choose, but they don't lay much and will go broody often. You will need to have something set up to break hens that come from broody breeds.

There are many hatchery choice breeds that can work well for a first flock. Generally they are dual purpose breeds like Australorp, Orpingtons, rocks, and Sussex to name a few. An all bantam flock can be enjoyable too. I personally love my bantam cochins and d'uccle.

I personally would avoid game based breeds, and crested birds if you are a beginner. They can sometimes come with maintenance problems. Breeds that are colored red or some time Wyandotte seem to not handle close confinement well, and people experience more aggression problems with them, so how big an area you have will factor in. Some breeds need more exercise, both mentally and physically.

My very first flock I picked solely on looks about 30 years ago. What a mess that bunch was and I was happy to be rid of most. I kept some bantams around but got rid of all the standard breeds. It was my fault because I stuffed too many birds in too small of an area. I've definitely learned a lot since than. I wish there had been a website like this back than, but of course there wasn't, I don't think there was any websites 30 years ago. :)

True, they are usually the dominant ones. Our last surviving RIR (she died of old age a few months ago), Susie, was the “head honcho” before we got our rooster. She would break up fights between the other hens and indicate that she was the boss, she even still did it a little when our rooster was there. She was never mean though, not to us or the other chickens. She never constantly picked on them or terrorized them, like hens at the top of the pecking order are known to do, and all of our other RIR’s were very sweet too.
Susie wasn’t raised with the hens we have at the moment, but she still got used to them and wasn’t ever mean. I’d say if you were going to raise all your chicks together it would be even better. I guess it really depends on the personality of the chicken; you can get sweet ones from the mean breeds and mean ones from the nice breeds. I guess you never really know.
Good luck on choosing your chicks!!:ya

Wow everyone has given me such great responses. We have an acre and a half, we have an old shed we converted, it just needs a few finishing touches. Based on what everyone has said, we are going to cross off the following breeds: Yokohama, Modern Game, all of the cresteds, and all bantams

We’re sure we’re adding these ones: Jersey Giant, Australorp, and Orpington

We can’t decide if we should add these ones: Turken, Standard Cochin, Cornish, Orloff, Faverolle, we also added two more to the maybe list :barnie RIR and Red Star.

There are too many beautiful chickens! Haha

Just to update, we finally decided which seven we want to get. Please let us know if this flock will work well together or if their general personalities don't mix well together. Again they will all be hens.
Black Australorp
2 Orpington-Buff and White
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
Turken
White Laced Red Cornish
Black Jersey Giant
