How to do a pitched roof?

I was planning on having the front part of the coop at 5.5' high and the back at 5' high--is that enough of a pitch for rain to run off okay? I was thinking of doing shingles, not metal roofing.

You have the right idea, but I'd suggest that it is not. Depending on the run of the roof (the long direction) that is not sufficient. It is better than nothing mind you, but I'd go to 6/5 at least.

I'd advise against it. Shingles are not good on low-pitch roofs. They leak. While a leak in a henhouse is not as bad as a leak onto a drywalled ceiling and your dining room table, it is still not a good thing and a nuisance/expense to fix.

I'd suggest either using roofing that does adequately well on low-pitch roofs (such as, but not limited to, metal roofing panels - you can get them in colors, if you just don't like the look of galvanized); or if you want to use shingles, make your roof significantly higher pitch, I believe 3/12 is about the lowest you'd want to go.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I am in Martinez.
I pitched my coop roof the same as my house.

Ok, so since you're in Martinez--is that Yardbirds over there still open or is it completely gone already? I went to the one in Concord and got some STEALS on a few things like hinges and a few other things. Wondering if the one in Martinez is gone yet...thanks!

The Yard Birds are ALL gone. The one in Martinez is now a Home Depot. I got some great buys when they closed it as Yard Birds, too. It is staying open as a Home Depot at this point.

that's good to know. I think the one on Ygnacio has about five days left before it's totally gone. I got a few hinges and stuff that I will need, but nothing major left. Oh, but I found some vinyl self-stick tiles though for about 50 cents each (16 inch square).
