how to get baby chicks follow

Food... especially once you introduce them to grit and open up treat options. They need to think you're going to give them something and they'll come running..

I made sure to hold my chicks a lot and interact with them...especially when they got pasty butt :p
Now, as 1 year olds, they usually come when called. They also don't mind being held as much as they might've if I hadn't held them as chicks. And yes, food is very effective as well.
Happy chick raising!

Every time I fed them or gave them treats when they were little I'd say "here, chicky chicky." They didn't seem to pay attention to that at all. Several years ago my neighbor took my girls and put them in with his hens for the winter as I spent the winter in Arizona. When I came home I noticed that the neighbor was free ranging the chickens. I yelled "here, chicky, chicky" and my 6 girls came running across the fields to me. Due to a fox issue I started out with all new chicks last year. It took no time at all for them to learn that they should come to me when I call. I got home from Arizona 2 weeks ago. They did not forget. They are smarter than most people think they are.

Pasty butt? I got them on April 6

Okay, I'm just going to explain his plain, pasty butt happens when poop gets stuck on a baby chick's little bottom.

For me I just hold my chicks all the time, I like to hold them in my hand and pet them till they fall asleep. Just spend a lot of time with them. All my chicks follow me. Even my eight week olds and when I sit down they jump in my lap and lay down. Just let them know you are kind and one to trust. This is all I do and mine run after me.
