Oh my gosh. I'm the one who initially started this thread, and for some reason, I was not getting notifications that there had been new posts added! I've recently gone back to school, so I don't get on here as much as I'd like. I'd actually pretty much given up on having chickens since I never heard from anybody back when I first started this.
Did any of you get together yet? I would be happy to meet with somebody, anybody. I still do not have chickens, but definitely want to.
I guess about a year ago I spoke with Vikki P. Yes, you would think that since she won her case (eventually), that those of us in Shelby Twp. could have chickens based on her victory. She says that is not the case, and I don't remember what she said exactly, so do now want to misquote. But I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with property size or "grandfather" clause, etc. I think she said it would have to be on an individual basis, but to me that just seems off.
Let me know if anybody sees this and wants to get together. I know there are plenty of people in Shelby Twp. who already have chickens and are "under the radar" so to speak. And I know it is probably scary to want to get involved for fear of losing the chickens you have. But wouldn't it be nice if the worry was just gone? To me, it would be great to be able to "legally" own 4 or 5 hens for eggs without the hassle of going "commercial". Many communities are going that route, so why not us? Especially with what is going on in Detroit and the attempted comeback. They are now allowed to do backyard gardening/farming. I'm not sure about chickens.
Do you all realize that in Shelby Twp., growing a garden with vegetables is just as "illegal" as owning chickens? Those things are BOTH against Shelby Twp. ordinance. I don't see anybody chasing after vegetable gardeners! Just my two cents.
