How to get off to a good start in your new neigbborhood (rant)

^ There's a thought... did the realtor notify them of the fact that roos were allowed there legally and that neighbor just right here had them? If it's that much of an issue for them then maybe they should talk to their realtor about disclosure.... it sure would be a shame if they moved.

I'd go with the peace offering too... since you really can't be 100% sure it was them, could have been a neighbor having a bad day and the officer didn't say who called right?... well you go on over there like you haven't a care in the world and greet them in a good old June Cleaver kind of way... THEN if they act like prigs at least you can tell the officer that YOU tried to be nice to them but they're reclusive cranky people...

And i wouldnt be going over and kissing their butts either..
they just made the first WRONG move IMO...
And i would NOT get rid of the roo either...
Do they have a dog? Call everytime its outside...
Do they have kids?.. complain that they are too noisy...
2 can play the game...
They moved into the country and dont expect people to have roosters? Give me a break... NO WAY that i would back down to them.

I'm not getting rid of Mr. Red, that's for sure.

However, I can leave them in the coops until later in the morning. The coops are at the farther edge of the backyard, and the neighbors who are complaining live across the street catty-corner to us, so that would keep the crowing out of the front yard at least. Most of the cockerels are already slotted for freezer camp, so that's not a big deal as their numbers will be diminishing pretty soon, however they seem like they crow less if I leave them in the bachelor pad - I think the head rooster dynamics are stronger when they can't go off in their own corner of the yard and claim/proclaim their little mini-territory. The only inconvenience is that they don't all return to the bachelor pad (despite leaving them in there for like 5 days straight

) So I'll have to round up the scragglers after dark...

We do technically live in the "city" but it's a really country type city. My parents call it "hickville"

and lots of people have chickens, including roosters. Even people who don't "keep chickens" --- my friend John has a white rooster that lives in his yard totally free range....they keep him around to keep the bugs down. I find it kinda weird to have just one roo, but I don't know the backstory on him, I imagine that he just got dumped there or something like that.

I looked and my copy of the nusience ordinance and my section just has the "sanitation" type stuff, overgrown grass, garbage, junk cars, etc. doesn't have the section on noises. Ima see if I can find out though.

ok wait a minute... I am probably going to peeve a few people off but what else is new.

you have chickens and roosters that are legal right....?

new person buys a house in your neighborhood and is now complaining that the roosters are to loud in the morning?.... or all day long?

OK first off even if you are legal... if you are breaking a noise by-law.. I am sorry YOU are in the wrong... not the newbie that just moved in,...dont go blaming them if they want you to follow the laws.

and for those who are suggesting to be just spiteful and calling every time a kid steps out of line or their dog is out side... thats just silly... if they are breaking the law too ok maybe... but dont do it just to be nasty you are opening up a can-o-worms and welcoming stress into your life

be a good neighbor... insulate your coop find some way of keeping the sound to a minimum until its legal.. (usually like 7 or 8am.. 9 on sundays) and then go buy a long crower and set him loose... BUT only when its daylight and legal

I keep my coop closed till 10am everyday because my neighbors are retirees and want to sleep in. I have 3 roosters that will crow no -stop, but our coop is well insulated and all doors are closed its like yelling into a pillow... muffled just enough not to cause a rift between my neighbor I have lived beside for 3 years and still dont know his name..

I would still like to see the noise ordinance.

Just because they are complaining, doesnt mean they are right. Even cops have been known to not know the rules until they are forced to actually read them. Theres no need to be "in your face" with this; on the other hand, you were there first, if you are complying with local laws, then stand your ground. But first see what the actual noise ordinance is.

HOWEVER, those neighbors are gone and the house has been vacant for over a year. New people show up and seem to think they know everything about the place.......yeah. right.

How is it that the neighbors who live right next to me aren't bothered by my roos - claim they don't even hear them, heck my house has NO wall insulation and I really only hear the roos when I have the windows open...but the people two houses down and across the street think they are so loud that they have to call the cops??? Um yeah.....
The new people across the street and 2 houses in the other direction said they didn't even notice I had chickens/roosters. It can't be THAT loud over there, and I'm not the only person who thinks so.

I feel for you, Tala.
I would NOT go over there and try to make peace with them... no way. (if they want peace.. they will come to you.. trust me) They should have done that before they called animal control on you first.
Again.. your chickens ARE legal... i would not let these people even think that they can bully you. Just stay firm.. but i would let the roos out later in the morning though..Just so you can show animal control that you DID indeed make an effort for these people...
and if thats not good enough... let them make the next move... dont back down.
We once had neighbors that tried to bully us too... threatened us with law suits because of a fence line, because they were trying to sell their house... (we were in the right and i knew it... we've had this property for over 40 years..i KNEW where the property line was.. and i TRIED to even tell them nicely that they didnt own that part of the property...but nooo.. they had to make it nasty....)
Anyways.. it got ugly for a few months but i didnt back down and they realized its was a futile effort..cause i can play real dirty too ...
By the end they were very apologetic and just wanted to sell their house...(which i was making very hard for them...

) they even ended up painting our fence for us...

(i kid you not!..)
