Yep, they are great for compost! They keep my run smelling nice. They just decompose when they get wet. I will probably have to add some more soon since we have had rainstorms.I just looked that up actually, and I can get them at lowes. I am also thinking of using them as a base for my potting soil. They seem cheaper than Coir coconut fibers or what ever it's called. Wet it down, let it expand and mix in Bunny Poopies. Instant potting soil. Maybe add Perlite and I can mix in compost if I do not have enough bunny pellets.
My first experience with wood pellets was when my parents had a wood pellet stove and I would pick them up and deliver them to my parents. I left a few in the back of my truck to weight down the back for better traction since they were only like $2 a 50 pound bag. when they got wet they expanded and stretched out the bag and when I opened the bag in spring it was this nice dry fluffy stuff (hadn't rained in a few weeks at that point). The price is probably double what it was back then but they expand an awful lot when they get wet so a thin layer on a coop floor will go a long long way. Likely great stuff to compost with. I haven't dealt with it in 20 years but I believe they would be the perfect bedding for a dirt floor coop. They will absorb moisture out of the ground then dry out, Moisture from the ground would go into the air through the wood pellets then out the high vents that should be just below the roof. Or that is my theory, still need to test it out. I just know my last dirt floor coop I have is housing my last batch of meat birds and in a couple of weeks it will be deconstructed. I have had issues when it rains heavy with the ground being wet even though its up high. If I ever have a dirt floor coop again I am going dump wood pellets in it.Yep, they are great for compost! Can I suggest a walkin???I do plan on building a much larger coop within the year. Hopefully. It's desperately needed! Chicken math got me REALLY GOOD!
