How to get some meat on my pups bones???

my 70 pound newfie mix gets 4 cups a day at 6 months old, (puppy chow) and glusoamine for its joints, and thats all.

It may just be the picture but to me, it looks like she's at a perfect weight. She doesn't even look thin in that pic. My vet has always said they'd prefer to see a dog a little on the thin side.

Did your vet say that she is underweight?

We had a hard time getting our pooch to gain weight too. He was a little underweight according to his vet, but otherwise healthy. You could see his whole spine. He ate great, but never gained weight. So, we started giving him pig ears everyday figuring those would fatten him up a little. We got him really fresh ones from a local ranch store. He loves them and has gained some weight--looks good now. Slender, but not scrawny and bony.

You might consult your vet about your dog's appropriate weight for her type and age. Good luck!

My Lhasa Apso is a light eater too but a healthy weight. Also, he will not eat out of a bowl. I have to put his food on a plate. I heard that some small breeds are like that.

He loves cheese and animal crackers though.

She's a cute dog. What a good mix. And I agree with the others, she looks healthy.

I strongly disagree with the comment that you are feeding too much..... Most dogs will eat whatever you put in front of them...but not all.

I would change foods before trying anything else. Puppy Chow is a pretty low quality food with a lot of fillers and she may just not like the taste. I suggest trying something with more meat in it...make sure animal products take up at least 3 of the first 5 ingredients listed (and the other 2 are not different forms of the same thing....like ground rice and whole grain rice or smt...). The food will be more energy dense (she will need to eat less to get the same amount of energy out of it), and she may like the taste better. Also with a higher quality food you will have less poop to pick up and it really doesn't cost as much more as it may look like since you feed less.

Solid Gold seems to be very palatable to dogs...I know of at least a few people who have had problem eaters but the dogs down Solid Gold. Nature's Variety is great. Wellness is pretty good. I've heard that Eagle Pack and Innova are very good as well. Solid Gold and Wellness are probably the easiest of those to find.

You wrote: "2 cups of food twice daily..."

That is what I feed my 90 lb. labradoodle and the groomer said he is getting fat!
(The vet said he is fine.)
Unless your vet is concerned - drop this.

I feed my 60 lb. dog less than 2 cups a day. She gets a special natural food that has more nutrition per volume than commercial foods, but not that much more.... Puppies may need a little more for growth... but not that much!

If you are going by the feeding suggestions on a commercial puppy food bag, you are expecting him to eat a WHOLE lot more than he needs or wants, in my opinion and experience. The puppy looks fine in the photos. Let him eat til he stops then remove the rest. Otherwise you will end up with an overweight dog, and I promise you, there a a lot of reasons you do not want that.

Your vet said she was fine. If you are that concerned, take her back to the vet, find out what she weighs and what her likely adult weight will be, and weigh her at home every month or so. Then you can better gauge how much you should feed.

I cannot believe a dog that size needs 4 cups a day of any kind of dog food.

She is just adorable! She could be teething too. And eating could hurt her mouth.
My dogs eat on the run too. They take a few pieces of food from the bowl and lay down and eat them. They never stand over the bowl and eat until they are full.
I really like Purina Pro Plan small breed formula for pups and younger dogs. I can't give it to my older dogs though because they get fat on it.
