How to Grow a Blueberry Bush

I'm a bit amused about this "growing blueberries" thought, since they're just found everywhere in the forest here. And Finnish legislature has a term known as "everyman's right", which means that any person is free to pick any wild berries, mushrooms or other plant produced fruits in anyone's forest, so no one needs to grow them.

It is different here you can get shot going onto someone else's property and picking their food. Of course most will let you if you ask. But I live in the black belt of Alabama and our soil is a heavy clay and I am told that blueberries will not grow here. So I want to try some in large pots and see how they do. I have to drive over an hour to get to a nursery to buy plants so I mostly buy them online and have them delivered.

Yeah, and in Finland there has actually been discussion about limiting the rights to only include private persons. There are berry picking companies who come in and completely clean pick large areas, using their legal right to do that. If only they would stick to decent amounts from one place, no-one would have any complaints.

I think that would be only fair and if they need more they should plant and grow them. That is what everyone here does.
That's not the problem - only 5% of all berries that the forests of Finland produce annually are actually picked. They would just need to spread out a bit when doing the picking.

I think you need to add peat moss to your soil to even it out. Mine is clay too.

Peat moss is good, and other humus, and maybe some decomposed pine needles. You could just put some sand underneath that, but you'll need at least 8-12 inches of the growth medium to make it sustainable (if your blueberries like similar spots as ours). If you want, I can dig up a spot that the chickens have destroyed and try to get some pictures of the layers in the soil.

Quote: From what I rememger of the blueberry barrens in Maine, that is coastal Maine, the berries did vary year to year based on the weather. THe best ( big and juicy) were found under the shade of another bush of any type. THis was a "field" with not trees, only a few bushes about waist high or shorter, and small bushes; Tallest about 18". All low bush blue beries . ALL wild types.

My high bush blue berries are wild type-- tiny berries. I have only wild types here thru my woods. No cultivated types at all.

The pricing you listed is off a bit-- perhaps a word missing?

We went for our evening walk again. This is how it looks in every direction.

I think we're going to start doing this every evening, just grab the mini bucket with us.

I weighed the contents before freezing them, about 350 grams.

The lingonberries seem to be doing well too, in a month or two they will ripen and turn red.
I just bought 3 Korelle lingnon berries!!!!!! So excited. Hmmm I can taste the pankaka and lingnon berry sauce, and butter!
