How to humanely put down a chick

I couldn't do any of the above except the vet option. Yep. Total wimp

I suggest the vet or even a knife. I don't like the idea of gassing or suffocation. Like planning my own death, I would rather it quick than slow

Agreed I don't think I would want my head chopped off or my neck broken.

It really doesnt make a difference, except for the vet fees. Cuddling a little chick and cutting off the head before he knows what happening is a lot nicer then a scary trip to the vet and being handled by a complete stanger in a strange place. Some goes for a full grown bird.

When it was my turn to face the music, my neighbor who raised turkeys as a kid suggested I take the head off with long armed branch shears. I put the young thing in a grocery bag and did what I had to do. I belive in my heart that was the right way to do it. It was very quick and clean being it was all done in a bag. It really wasn't as bad to do it the first time as I thought it would be. As it is, I was the kid that had my little sister put the worm on the hook when I was young cause i didn't want to "harm the worm", a serious wuss so you know I've never done anything like this! I still kinda feel the same way about inflicting unnesesary pain upon random beings but at least you know it needs to be done. Think of it this way, at least now if you decide to do meaties, you'll have a leg up on how to do the tough part!

My dad was raised on an East Tennessee farm and they had a story they thought was hilarious about one of his family members trying to do this exact thing, and the "whip snap" move didn't work well for her either.

Suffice to say that when the time comes, I will simply use a sharp knife like my dad did.

Gassing is illegal last time I checked and I cannot believe a vet would offer that advise! Not to mention taping a plastic bag to a cars tailpipe while it is running would only result in the tilpipe getting hot and the bag melting and falling away from the pipe and you would then have either a chicken that is gasping for air looking at you or a brain damaged chicken. If you have access to a vet that euthanizes for you, why not just bring the poor thing to her to have it put down with the dignity it deserves.

I think the best way to get rid of a chicken is give it someone who want to do it for you...but everyone here loves there chickens and no one way works for anyone. d owhat you think is best for the situation.

If your friend is a vet why wouldn't they just do it? We've luckily never had to deal with this but we did kill a roo two weeks ago. We researched a humane way to do it and watched some videos on it. I am not used to this sort of thing but we picked him up, we cut a 4 litre milk jug in half and cut a big hole in the top. We stuck his head in that upside down, he was very calm (considering the mean ol' thing used to screech it's head off if I just poked my head in the coop to count them (and he would bite me!!!). Anyway, his throat was slit and the knife was inserted through the top of his mouth into his brain which killed him instantly. It was simple, clean and didn't seem to cause too much distress. I didn't want to do it but I thought he was a she

Then it turned out to be an overly aggressive he who I doubt anyone would want for breeding purposes. For a non-farm/non-hunting girl, I think I handled it very well.

I use the loppers and the feed sack method. I bought a very sharp, good pair of adjustable handle limb loppers from the HD. That is the only thing they are used for so they stay good and sharp. I am a big wussy when it comes to putting them down, and found this way to be best for me and the chicken. I tried neck wringing but found I only ended up giving them chiropractic adjustments.....

I place the chicken into the sack after spending some time with it. I position the loppers, do the deed, and it is already in a sack so i don't have to look. Their is some movement after decapitation, it was hard for me at first, but I realize now it is just involuntary movement. What ever way is quick and painless as possible to the animal is best. It's a hard thing.

I spray a cotton ball with 'Gunk' engine starter fluid till it's fairly soaked, , it's either, and seal it in a ziploc baggy with the chick... they just go to sleep...
