I'm sort of new to this chicken thing. And I feel like an idiot having to ask this: but exactly how do I know if my young hen is actually a rooster? He/She has a large, very red comb. The feathers on the backend don't seem particulary curly/long. He/She only has 4 toes, no spur (yet). He/she has a deep voice and...here's the kicker...just saw him/her stand on top of another hen. Any chance of a gay hen? I'd really really like it to be a hen!

Looks like a roo to my un-expert eye.

Look at the hackle and saddle feathers. They look pointed to me which indicates a roo. As opposed to rounded feathers in these areas which would indicate a hen. The large dark comb and waddles are also a good indicator especially when compared to hens of the same breed. Sorry your hen turned out to be a roo.

Craaaaaapppp! My neighbors are not cool with Roos. I'm going to have to get rid of him. Anyone in the Jacksonville, Florida area interested in a fine, healthy RIR Roo? If not... any good advice on other measures I should take? I'll try CraigsList, too.
