I was with my wife and my 9 mo old baby (munky) at the docs office where he was getting a follow up cuz he had bronchitis and an ear infection. Doc looked at me (known me since I was about 7) and asked me how I was feeling. Told her I was good and she called me a liar. Took my BP and cursed me for not complaining more.. (why I love my doc, she is straight to the point and doesn't hold back.. one of my childhood hero's) and told me BP was 180 over 120.

I had a mini-stroke 2 years ago that didn't damage me too badly (depending on who you ask, my ego or my body) and the decreased endurance and strength hadn't curbed my appetite in time.

So to avoid another increase in my bp meds and water pills I am curious if there is a safe method of loosing weight/muscle mass in an efficient manner over a shorter length of time?

Currently I am doing the following........ Special K for breakfast with skim milk...... Salad for lunch.......... 1 chicken breast, half a head of iceburg lettuce, dozen crutons, 1/4 cup shreded cheese, red wine vinager, pickled bananna peppers...... Dinner is something lean/low fat like chicken breast with green beans, corn or mixed veggies... Sometimes a turkey burger patty with whole wheat n Catsup.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My next doc appt is in 2 weeks. Folks don't think I look like 230ish but I am. used to be strong.. bear strong, worked out daily strong... now I have to loose body mass regardless of what type to take stress off heart.. Would love ideas, help etc.

Research the Atkins diet,... its a meat and salad diet... (no carbs or sugars)..and you're NEVER hungry on it... you can eat till you are full.
It also is supposed to help with blood pressure issues, and water gain issues.... etc..
We just did it, and hubby lost 11 LBS in a week & a 1/2...
I only lost 6...

still not bad... for only a week..
You need to stay on the "induction" part of the diet to lose the most weight...

I've tried that.. Hard diet to follow when your food budget is as thin as mine is

My only recommendation would be a little fruit. Banana on the cereal maybe, an apple for a snack mid morning, orange juice? I'm not seeing much Vitamin C--citrus fruit, spinach, carrots. Think dark greens and oranges.....maybe a multi vitamin? I would recommend exercise. Even if it's a BRISK walk, as long as your health allows it you need to get your heart rate up to make it effective.

Good Luck, I can't seem to lose wait this time around (I lost 60, gained 80)

While I'm editting for spelling I will add---a good night's sleep? What are we both doing awake at this hour? (oh, you have a baby....)

Atkins done properly with fish and lean meats can be effective. The South Beach diet is a little less restrictive and easier to stick with for a lot of people. Any quick diet has risks, though. You are better losing 1-2 lbs a week with good diet and exercise.

You might also try adding cod liver oil supplements and flax meal to your diet to lower your blood pressure.

Well, I donno if it'll work or not but I've been trying to cut out the corn... corn is in essence pure sugar... sugar gives you a temporary hyper boost... gets the blood pumping... (actually have a theory about some kids being diagnosed as ADD/hyper really just reacting to all the flipping corn in their diets)... but in addition to the temporary effect there's also the long term weight gain... as evidenced by the fact that our obesity rate has skyrocketed... even with thousands of low fat, yada yada stuff on the market... heck even a milkshake nowadays is like 50% corn... not to mention the chicken nuggets. Corn (again, sugar) is in EVERYTHING. And if corn isn't in it than soy is, protein sure, but it also amounts to calories.

My mom has been having some stomach and blood pressure issues... the BP issue for her though has always been LOW... too low. They've tried a med on her (for other stuff) and panicked because they couldn't find a pulse! So, mostly I've been thinking in the opposite direction... but I've been researching for her and us for general health and even weight loss (for me) as well.

I can tell you that caffeine is a diuretic... aka a thinner. It makes you pee more, and it basically thins your blood. Think about Excedrin, secret ingredient is caffeine for this exact reason. Headaches, many anyways, are caused by high blood pressure in the noggin... hence the pounding... take caffeine and it thins that out some... add in a pain reliever and there you go. Tried telling mom to avoid caffeine, with her low BP it's just NOT a good idea... but for someone with high, or even borderline, BP that might be a step in the right direction. Even Folgers (or is it Maxwell House?) makes a 1/2caff tub of coffee so maybe you could start there... use half regular and half decaf tea bags... and so on... then eventually switch to full decaf?? That's what I'm trying to talk Mom into but so far no dice... for you I'd recommend the opposite... increased, to at least 3 servings a day, of (organic) coffee or tea (no soda since that is massively laced with corn) and LOTS OF WATER... because that increased peeing can cause dehydration if you don't monitor it properly. 8 8oz glasses is NOT necessarily the be all end all for each and every person... don't drink until you're sloshing or anything, but stick to water when you aren't drinking your allotted dose.

Uncle Wayne was prescribed a glass of wine per day for his... poor guy hated the stuff. That really stout and icky red wine?? He literally held his nose and drank it like it was Nyquil.

Pretty much how I feel about it as well, but then I don't have BP that might kill me. If that was the case I might be a little more tolerant.

That about sums up my attempts at research/experience thus far... all I can really say is BREATHE... stress is a HUGE factor in blood pressure... clean (ignore the jet fuel) breaths through the nose... icky stressed out breaths out through the mouth... and I mean breathe ALL the way... fill those lungs up... and release completely... good for oxygen supply, relaxing, and if you throw in some good imagination and visualizing it can be a nice little boon.

It isn't healthy to loose weight too fast, as I am sure your doctor would tell you.
What I would recommend is weight watchers (meeting style or online, both are good!) because it takes into account many factors because not everyone should eat the same amount. It is designed to lose at a healthy rate and is very effective if you stick to it.
I have lost about 30 lbs. 3 of my close friends have also lost about that much. We were inspired by my other friend who lost 90 lbs. The difference is remarkable. I really can recommend the program, even though I hate measuring my food. It really brings to light many things I didn't know about what I ate. Some things I thought were healthy really aren't and some I expected to be bad for me really aren't.

I would seriously research the HCG diet. You can drop 20lbs easy in 1 month. Good luck. After I am done having babies, I plan on going on it.

I don't mind 1-2 lbs a week, I just don't want to rebuild the muscle that was there before. I am finding all that "muscle memory" stuff to be true, and honestly, I wouldn't mind loosing the muscle mass (gasp, did I just say that in public?) yeah. I have kids to live for, and less of me = longer I stick around. I guess I've known I've had to do something for a while but it didn't hit home till I saw the doc on accident. Something about my coloring etc alerted her.

I've been eating mostly raw and low suger, carb, fats for a while but not having a lot of luck. May go back to a strict atkins if needed soon though.

If you increase exercise you're gonna increase muscle... one reason it's hard to see loss for what it is. For DH it's dern near impossible to lose fat because he can't get his heartrate to the required level... he's only got a 12% body fat, but it's ALL in his stomach... very annoying that because of the low percentage his heart would have to beat like 200 BPM to burn fat. His PE teacher literally had no chart that fit him. He just does too much labor every day, has that muscle, and so it's a blessing and curse.

1-2lbs a week is SAFE, but do NOT freak if it's 1/2-1lb a week if you're increasing activity because you may very well be losing 2-3lbs of fat and packing on 1/2-2lbs of muscle... results in less "lost" on the scale... but still healthier than before.
