I've just been using (slightly)educated guesses on who to pair up to get a white chicken with black skin. Ive only been successful a couple times and it seems to be a random thing that is difficult for me to reproduce. If anyone has some advice or can share experience it would be very helpful and appreciated!

Satin silkies

Or white Silkie paired with white Cochin or any white skinned breed that has white feathers.

Do you prefer dominant or recessive white?

EDT: Leghorns are dominant white (I). Dominant white is a mutation of black. They use dominant white on a black background (E) to be completely white. Unfortunately, if you cross them with something that does not have a black background, such as partridge or duckwing, the third generation is going to have some members that are partridge or duckwing, and will only show the dominant white in the places where they usually have black.

Cochins are recessive white. Recessive white will not show up in the first cross unless both parents have it, because it's recessive. But if you cross two white parents that have the recessive white genes, their chicks will be white unto the hundreth generation.

EDT2: I see you already knew this. Sorry. I'll leave it for posterity, anyway.

Recessive I think because I also need to be able to produce the grey fibro and black ones I've already managed. Would crossing a silkie mess with my feather quality? Most of the birds I'm using are pretty hard feathered

Silkie feathers are recessive. The chicks will be poofier (especially in the butt region) than normal, but their feathers will be hard.

EDT: Wait. You have solid-coloured (E/E) birds and you want to be able to produce black and grey. (Blue?) I would think dominant white would be perfect.

Silkie feathering is recessive.
Thank you, I've never owned a Silkie yet! They seem high maintenance, is there a way without them? This chick is as close as I have come so far without using a Silkie

I haven't a clue! That's probably why I'm having no luck lol. Yes I think these would be blue? Here's what they look like
