I was always told that grabbing by the wings was a bad idea, too much risk for injury. Even if I could find out for a fact that that was true, that they can be safely handled by the wings, I don't know if I could emotionally accept it...saw too many broken wings come in to the place I worked as a wildlife rehabillitator. We were always taught to pick up ducks and geese by supporting them with one arm holding the legs tight against the body and around that body, and the other hand supporting and controlling the head and neck. And believe me, holding onto a wild Canadian honker is no easy feat! For this reason, it really wigged me out seeing how some judges handle people's ducks at a show when I saw the runners getting judged in the ring...no way would I want someone running my duck down and then slinging him over the fence by his wings. I felt they were getting handled more like luggage being unloaded on the tarmac than living creatures!
