Thanks for all the ideas. Electric is not practical, but I like the idea of concrete pavers. I'd probably still bury them vertically - the position of the run doesn't allow for a lot of paving or wire on the ground next to it.
So 12" down should be fine? If I'm reading right what you're saying is that the animal digs a little, hits the barrier and stops - they don't just keep going down further? Don't have to worry about foxes (and if I get coyotes I've got bigger problems!). Don't know about our dogs - we'll have to wait and see. They're greyhounds, not terriers, so I don't know how determined they'll be at tunneling, but I suspect they'll get discouraged easily if there's a barrier.
