How to pronounce Leghorn

I am originally from Ohio and I pronounce it Leghorn.

My friend who is from Kentucky pronounces it leggern.

I thought he was talking about a whole other breed of chickens, LOL.

Hmmm...I've been wondering if I'm pronoucing certain chicken breeds correctly, but I didn't even wonder about Leghorn....I just assumed it was Leghorn, as in Foghorn.

What about Cochin...I know it's everybody's favorite breed but I've never heard it said out-loud...is it CO-kin?

The legghern pronunciation is from the Amish influence as is Dominiker for Dominique. Since many folks have for many years gotten their stock form the Amish farmers, the adaptation of their pronunciation as taken hold in many parts of the country.

Out west, It is Leghorn, my grandmother had many of them and no one around her area called them Legghern.

Around here, it's even worse than Leggern. One old southern guy really confused me when he started talking about LAYgerns. I guess it's appropriate, though, since they really do lay!
