My method:

Place the chicken in a large bin with a lid. Add a chunk of dry ice in another container with a lid and holes in the top, and add water to it. Close the lid tightly and leave her be. You can also put a blanket or towel over the top to stimulate nighttime.

It sounds a little horrible at first, they often thump pver when the CO2 puts them to sleep. Leave her a few minuets in there before taking her out.

Quickest, easiest method I know of. Car exhaust can burn and sting.

So, the bin with the dry ice goes inside the one with the chicken, right? I mean, you don't run tubes to it, right?

If you can get some Ace from your vet that will work. I just walk in and get mine, but lots of Vets will not allow that, without bringing in the animal.

An axe is really quite quick.

I had to just go thru that this morning!!

I was running late for work and checked on the chicks before I left and 1 looked like it had a broken neck. It was a little messed up last night like it maybe had a sore neck and was favoring it but this morning it was roates all the way around like 180 degrees? The tops of its head was pretty much touching the floor and its beak was facing straight up. It couldnt walk anymore and I knew it was suffering. I didnt want to do it and I always try and help any animal that is sick or injured but I just knew it shouldnt suffer anymore

It was a hard call and I didnt wanna do it but I had my boyfriend go out and shoot it.

Didnt wanna but I knew it would be quick. I didnt have any time to research but it seemed like the quickest way to me. Neither of us would have the heart to break its neck or cuts it head off or anything close to that, we would be traumatized!! I even have a hard time eating chicken now since I have them as pets. (I am a chicken newbie)

Ace is what they use to sedate stallions to geld them, or if they have injuries you can use it for pain. They have other medications for sedation also, but I can't remember the name right off hand. I just call it Rompi, but that's not the proper name for it.

askjcm2005, my chickens are also my pets so I know exactly what you mean. Wow.. thats strange what happened to your chicken! Ive never heard of anything like that! I have a hard time eating chicken now too! haha

Well, my husband has guns so I know that is an option as well

I just hate the thought of it

Acepromazine. It is a yellow colored injectable sedative. Also comes in pill form. We always avoided it in stallions because it caused vasodialation and priaprism. A stallion waking up with a priaprism is a disaster. It can get so bad that the organ can become ischemic and ...errrrr....well, that has it's own complications.

Many people use it though for standing procedures.

Rompun is xylazine, another sedative. Both are available only from a vet.

The dry ice is acceptable. It is CO2 euthanasia and approved for small animals and birds. It is quick and painless. However, a secondary method of death needs to be performed after CO2 'death' since sometimes they can 'recover'. I suggest wringing the neck or decapitation if you can handle it.
Just an old vet tech's 2 cents worth....
Sorry about your chook

I live in a rural area where vets have different ideas then the 'big city' vets...I think mine will be willing to help me out with something to keep on hand for culling. I live alone without children and can store it safely.

I have my trusty .38 (and the permit to carry it) but I suspect that if I shot mine I'd have tiny chicken guts and blood and feathers all over the place if I got it to stand still long enough so I can draw a bead on it...and succeeded in killing it and not myself or one of the dogs.

Yeah it was horrible!! We rescue cats and dogs and have had many feral kittens with upper respiratory infections, coccidia, etc... I am always able to help them but I just couldnt do anything for the poor guy. We just got out chickens in the beginning of June and everything has been fine until we went and got 12 new silkie chicks. 1 died yesterday out of nowhere, no signs, nothing! Then I came home and this 1 had the neck that seemed like he held it to the side a little then this morning it was unbearable to look at, I was sooo sad!! Now I look at them and 3 have really poppy butts and its just collecting there. I am really scared because I already put 2 of them older silkies outside with the rest of my flock and they've been there for almost a week! So far everything out there seems fine. I had no time and felt bad leaving the chicks this morning but I had to. As soon as I get home I am going to soak there bums in warm water and help get that stuff off.

The only problem I see after they are :(dead:( I dont know what to do with it. I could bury them but the coyotes will try and dig it up usually or neighbors dogs...
