How to tell gender by color

I am wondering how old jumbo brown coturnix are before you can tell males from females by color. I have three baby quail, and they are three weeks old. They all look the same. Creamy breast color and speckled. My adult male has very rich rusty red brown colored chest. When do males develop this? I hope I just have three females.

2-3 weeks you can see the color difference on chest. There is always the chance that you get a "mutant" one that cannot be sexed by color or vent. but thats a low low low chance.

I tried earlier, but I couldn't get a clear picture. I will try tomorrow by a window. Maybe better light will help.

2.5 weeks you can typically start to see the males losing spots, by 3 weeks it's pretty obvious, 3.5 weeks you're pretty much 100% sure.

I'd say you have three females if they are that age. Why doesn't that ever happen to me?
