We actually have an awkward situation with a neighbor. We've only been living here seven months and barely know these folks. But a young mother (with a husband) has come by several times borrowing money. First it was $10 to buy baby formula. Then it was $20 to buy cigarettes. Then another request for $40 - my husband only had $20 in his wallet and she promised to pay him back in a couple days. No repayment. Now we hear she asked our neighbor for $200 to pay their car registration.
i'm fine helping folks on occasion if we have the money. But we currently have a TON of debt. We don't really have any "spare" money. And i don't like the idea of loaning money to buy ciggies.
i think it's great when folks can help out family and neighbors and strangers and all. But there is a point where you have to stop and help yourself. A sinking ship can't help anyone.
