How were cows killed before there was guns?

I would guess they cut across the jugular with a knife and the cow bled out. Not sure though

That's a possibility that I had thought of, although I'm not sure how they would hold a cow down while they're sliting it's throat.
They must of had a lot of people to help them hold the cow down.
I still don't know though, cows are some pretty strong animals.

ETA: I guess they could've knocked the cow out first and then slit it's throat.

Oh yeah, you're right. I'm surprised I never thought of that!

Look up Kosher or Hallal (sp?) slaughter methods, which haven't really changed for millenia.
Stunning can be done with a big mallet, correctly applied. The stun gun is safer though, and of course using stocks to hold the steer.
Really big steers and bulls are difficult, if the stocks aren't big and strong enough.
Our previous ox team weighed in at 2900 pounds each!

That jugular cut can be done, but lengthwise, not across. I wouldn't want to try it unless stunning was done first though.
In Europe at least, people made blood sausage, out of blood.

It just takes a quick slice to sever the jugular.... Then it takes a couple of guys to hang on while the cow bleeds out.... To be Kosher it has to be done humanely with prayer... I think Hlal is the same (SP?)

The blood can be caught if there is no restrictions on it to be used in Sausage... In order for the meat to keep better the blood must be drained out.

But to be honest its a pretty easy death for the animal. They just get tired and lay down to go to sleep.
