Howdy. About to be chicken mom!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X3 on TwoCrows' advice. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens did you get?

Are they there yet? Are they there yet? I have no new birds to look forward until at least next spring, must live vicariously through the excitement of others...............

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I actually think that straw makes a great bedding choice. However, I do agree it's not super absorbent so consider mixing it with pine shavings. Straw also traps heat so it's wonderful to use in the winter. Like Two Crows said, chickens will love to scratch in the straw and search for bugs. Straw makes a great bedding.

Pine shavings are another option. They are absorbent and easy to clean. They are dusty however. So be sure to use the large pine shavings. Never use cedar as it is toxic.

Fans do help cool things down but can also be dangerous. I've found that leaving windows open at night and by hanging a frozen water jug in the coop helps cool things down. But as long as the wire and cords are out of chickens reach and that the fan is not rubbing on anything, they are safe.

Glad you joined and good luck with your flock!

Thank you for all the advice here so far. Yes the chickens arrived. Within a day I had an egg. They average about 3 a day for 4 hens. I am very pleased. I left the coop floor empty and have straw in the nesting boxes. In their run they have dirt that they love to bathe in.
400
This their coop.

Congratulations on the eggs, and you have a very cute coop. If you want to improve the efficiency of their bathing, put a large flat box of wood ash in the coop for them. Not only will they love it, but wood ash is more effective than dirt in preventing lice and mite infestations.
